Spray-dried powder is held in silos so that moisture spreads evenly through it before pressing. Feeders draw powder from the silos to the press hoppers.

Powder is pressed in a die to form the green tile, which still holds moisture and has little strength. The green tile is dried before any glaze is applied to it.

Engobe and glaze are applied to the dried tile and the pattern is printed onto the surface. Glaze is kept stirred and screened so that it stays uniform along the line.

Decorated tiles pass through the kiln, where the body vitrifies and the glaze fuses, then through a cooling section. Waste heat from the cooling zone is taken back to the dryers.

Vitrified tiles are polished and squared on the edges where the finish calls for it. The tile is washed after grinding so that no slurry dries on the face.

Fired tiles vary in tone and in size, so they are sorted into shade and calibre groups and checked for surface faults. Rejects are taken off the line before packing.

Tiles of one shade and calibre are boxed together, coded, and stacked on pallets. Pallets are wrapped and labelled for the warehouse.
